This course builds the skills and knowledge required to select and use the most relevant evidence and data to support decision making in local government. 

What you will learn

On completing this course participants will: 

  • understand what counts as evidence and data in a local government context 

  • understand what evidence and data exists for local government decisions  

  • understand key considerations when collecting data and evidence for local government decisions in the Aotearoa New Zealand context. 

Who should attend

This course is designed for local government advisors who work alongside quantitative specialists, or are new to using data, evidence and research in their work.

Course format

This course consists of 3 x 2-hour facilitator-led, live-learning sessions delivered on ZOOM. There arehours of coursework to complete in between sessions. The course consists of eight hours of learning in total. 

What is covered in the course

Session one

  • Why we need evidence and data to inform advice.
  • Key concepts underpinning evidence and data.
  • Evidence for decision making: voice of community, measurement, prior knowledge.

Session two

  • Overview: nationally-available local data.
  • Case study: Social Wellbeing Agency’s Community Insights tool.
  • Case study: Figure.nz.
  • Practical application of the Community Insights and Figure.nz tools.

Session three

  • Data governance and ethics.
  • Introducing the Māori Data Sovereignty model.
  • Applying the model to the local government context.
